Cat Sneaks Into A Zoo And Becomes Friends With A Lynx 3  It doesn’t matter what kind of animal you are, friendships develop just the same. This couple of friends are the living proof: in St. Petersburg’s Zoo, a European lynx has become friends with a regular Russian cat.

According to Love Meow, the feline was homeless and happen to find some food where the lynx lived. Not only was the lynx fine with sharing, they also became great friends.

It seems as if the cat needs the lynx as much as she needs her.

says Love Meow. People explain that the cat considers the lynx to be her mother, as she was just a kitten when she made this unusual friend. The Zoo, seeing this friendship, adopted the cat so they could live together, as they still do.

For National Microchipping Month we’re raising awareness of the importance of microchipping your cat. It’s a simple procedure which increases the chances of a lost cat being safely reunited with their owner, should they go missing.

One lucky cat who was reunited with her owners was three-year-old Dolly, who stowed away on board a luxury motor cruiser.

Adopted from Cats Protection’s Isle of Wight Adoption Centre, Dolly was missing for five weeks, leaving her owner Debs Murphy-Latham concerned for her safety. Little did she expect that the black-and-white cat had made her way on board a yacht and sailed over to Poole in Dorset.

Although Dolly’s inquisitive nature has resulted in a few disappearances prior to her boat trip, she could usually be found around the island.

On this occasion, Debs and her daughters Natasha and Annabelle had almost given up hope of finding Dolly again until they received a phone call from the owner of the luxury boat. Fortunately, Dolly was microchipped so they were able to trace her back to her owners, resulting in a happy reunion.

“I think she has developed a taste for the high life,” said Debs. “It’s not the first time she’s tried to board a yacht.”

With Dolly safely returned to her home on the Isle of Wight, there’s hope that this cat has fulfilled her wanderlust for now!

Cats Protection is a member of a Microchip Advisory Group (MAG), aiming to improve the standards of microchipping across the UK. We are also a member of the Microchipping Alliance which campaigned to make microchipping a legal requirement for all dogs. We also raise public awareness of the benefits of microchipping to cats and other companion animals. Find out more at www.cats.org.uk/cat-care/key-cat-care/microchipping

Be open to new ideas.

I yam who I yam.

Today I’m thinking about how humans are always trying to change other people. And that’s a shame.

We all bring something different to the table and embracing these differences, new ideas, and ways of doing things can benefit everyone involved.

I’m a cat who doesn’t like to be held. The staff is a very cuddly human and she likes to hold cats. This was a problem all those years ago when I first came to live here. She’d try to hold me and I’d try to get away. It seemed we were at an impasse on the cuddling front.

But fortunately, my staff was smart enough to know I wasn’t going to change and suddenly enjoy being carried around like a baby, so she stopped picking me up all the time and gave me the opportunity to show her my way of doing things.

Once she stopped, she says she realized that I am a cuddler….but in my own way. I like to sit next to her, pressed up against the side of her. That’s my way of being close and now she likes it better because we can sit there for hours, all snuggled up together, without anyone’s arms getting tired.

We are all a compilation of our experiences and history and personalities. Each of us is beautiful and wonderful and unique and we offer different viewpoints on how things can be done.

Don’t try to change others. Accept who they are and their lovely unique selves and you just might discover a more cuddly way of life.

5 Ways to Stop Your Cat from Falling Out of a Window

When the weather gets nice and people open their apartment windows, cats and dogs can (quite literally) start falling from the sky. This emergency occurs so frequently that it has its own name, “high-rise syndrome.” So if you live with pets (or young children) above the second floor of any building (it need not be a true high-rise), pay very careful attention to this one.

When cats fall, they are likely to suffer severe injuries that extend well beyond broken bones. This is particularly true when they fall from heights between two and seven stories. In such cases, it’s common for them to sustain bruising to their heart and lungs, fracture of their lower jaw and the roof of their mouth, and swelling of the brain. Many of these cats will also suffer a rupture of their urinary bladder, internal bleeding, or rib fracture — and this is all in addition to broken legs.

Amazingly, many of these cats survive and do quite well. However, fixing them is neither cheap nor fast. Costs for treating severe high-rise syndrome cases are often in the range of $2,000 to $5,000-plus, and these pets are typically going to need to be in the hospital for several days. These poor guys require true intensive care, often requiring supplemental oxygen therapy and temporary feeding tubes.

Interestingly, cats who fall from heights above seven stories typically sustain fewer and less severe injuries. But that’s not to say that you should let them do it. Make no mistake — even these cats can suffer painful or fatal injuries.

Cats often suffer a case of high-rise syndrome after having been startled off their perch, like the sill of an open window, by a loud noise (vacuum, blender, doorbell, screaming kids, etc.) or by losing their balance while jumping onto the ledge. It also occurs while hunting passing bugs, flies, or birds from an open window.

Given the potential severity of their injuries, the risk of death, the costs associated with treatment, and the fact that it can also happen to your children, I’d suggest doing all you can to prevent it.

Here are some useful preventive steps you can take.

1. Installing well-fitted and secure window screens.

If you have windows you want to open, such safety measures won’t prevent your cat from getting the fresh air they may desire, but they can help prevent them from suffering a painful fall. Just be sure to check regularly to ensure that your screens are snug and secure, and that your cat hasn’t been slowly scratching a hole in them with his claws.

2. If possible, open the top portion of your windows, rather than the bottom.

Or, if you have ‘hotel-style’ windows, open them to the side, rather than out.

3. Close all windows before you go out.

Get in the habit of closing your windows before starting any loud appliances. Many cats (and dogs) are scared of loud noises, especially sudden ones. This fear can serve them well in certain situations, but it can prove painful or deadly if there’s an open window around.

4. Don’t let your pets out on your balcony unobserved.

And even then, do not let them jump onto the railings. Move your patio furniture away from the railings to help keep your pets (and kids) from getting to a level where they are more likely to fall over. You can also consider using outdoor cat enclosures on your balconies and decks.

5. Close your windows before throwing toys to your cat.

Or do as your mother told you (for once), and don’t play ball in the house.

If one of your pets ever falls out of a window, bring her in immediately for veterinary evaluation and treatment. As outlined above, the list of potential injuries they may have suffered is much longer than just broken bones, and many of them aren’t likely to be obvious to you. There is no at-home treatment, and many of these pets are in extreme pain. Get them to the vet immediately.

DSC_0174

You all probably remember the adorable Vancie Plunkett who was in residence here at the IBKC just this past fall. She’s now goes by the name “Olivia”.

She landed herself a wonderful family, and as you’ll see in the text that follows, she is completely adored!

Here’s what Deb, her mama, has to say about their girl:

The amazing Miss Olivia continues to charm the socks off everyone she encounters! Whether it’s the sly “tag, you’re it” pat given as you walk by, the all-paws-outstretched jump for joy she makes as she sees you, or that irresistible purr she gives out so readily, Olivia wears her heart on her sleeve, er, um, fur! 🙂 Her beauty knows no bounds and that tail, oh my, it is a sight to be seen!  Everyone calls it Olivia’s built-in feather duster! Whitney and I both declare her to be so soft, you just want to hold her forever.  She will rub her face against yours and look at you with such heartfelt love that it almost takes your breath away!

Olivia loves to play! Anything is fair game if in Olivia’s reach as she maneuvers it deftly across a table top or the floor!

She knows her name and comes when called! Even if tucked away in one of her favorite hiding spots! She loves to curl up in her perch next to the living room window or the window seat in our bedroom. She’s got a great view of our backyard from both vantage points and she loves to watch the birds and squirrels.  She and the squirrels are quite good friends and frequently can be found in rapt attention simply watching each other through the window! I swear if the window weren’t there, they’d bound off together!  Now that it’s warmer, you will often Olivia fully stretched out on the futon in the library for her afternoon nap!

We so often remark what an extraordinary, loving kitten/cat Olivia is…and we know that’s due to the excellent start she got at the Charlene and Wylla Bean Finishing School!  We can never thank you enough for our now not-so Itty Bitty Kitty! We are completely, utterly besotted with dear Olivia!

Here are a couple of photos of Olivia, and some videos, too!

Thanks so much for sharing your sweet girl with us today, Deb! She’s so lucky she is to have a family that loves her so much!! Vancie/Olivia/s adoption tale is a real heart-warmer. If you need a feel-good moment today, please give it a read HERE!
